Gonadal function in adolescents and young women with juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract: The authors analysed the gonadal function and age of menarche of 23 female adolescents and young women with SLE, and correlated these with clinical, SLEDAI and therapeutic parameters. The presence of one or more clinical and laboratory parameters defined normal gonadal function: normal menstrual cycles with or without dysmenorrhea; elevated cervical mucus length; normal levels of plasma FSH, LH, estradiol, progesterone, prolactin and testosterone; normal urinary hormonal cytology; serial pelvic ultrasound comp… Show more

“…There is, however, no systematic study in the literature assessing the overall gonad function in male SLE patients and its relevance for sperm abnormalities. In a recent case report of 4 young male patients with SLE, we identified abnormal sperm morphology (teratozoospermia) in 2 patients and reduced sperm concentration (oligozoospermia/azoospermia) in the other 2 patients, both of which were associated with current IV CYC treatment (11).…”

Subsequent use of disease modifying agents for maintenance therapy, including Hydroxychloroquine, Mycophenolate Mofetil and Azathioprine are often used but without clinical trial evidence base for efficacy in NSPLE.…”
