Gonadal histology and some biochemical characteristics of Chalcalburnus tarichi (Pallas, 1811) having abnormal gonads

Abstract: The gonad histology, gonado-somatic index (GSI), 17b-estradiol (E 2 ) levels and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the carp species Chalcalburnus tarichi from Lake Van and the Karasu river, eastern Turkey, have been investigated. Fish between 5 and 7 years old were sampled from November 2003 to February 2004. The ratio of female fish caught in Lake Van with abnormal ovaries (AbOF) was 43.3%, but the fork length and body weight of these fish were not correlated with this abnormality. The weight of the ova… Show more

“…Johnson et al (1997) reported that atresia is thought to be an uncommon event in healthy females and it has been linked to poor nutrition and environmental stress. During the present course of work, it is observed that numbers of mature oocytes have been reduced with large follicular spaces, these observations coincides with those recorded by Unal et al (2007), Abou Shabana et al (2008), Mazrouch and Mahmoud (2009), Shobikhuliatul et al (2013) and Masarat et al (2014). From this study, it could be concluded that deformed and infected gonads of L. rohita collected from Harike wetland area were found in a higher percentage than those of River Beas.…”

“…These chemicals include breakdown products of detergents, pesticides, plasticizers, and a variety of chlorinated compounds (Sumpter and Jobling 1995;Carballo et al 2005). Considering the adverse physiological effects of EDCs on wildlife, many efforts have been made to develop and validate screening tests (Dizer et al 2002;Ü nal et al 2007). Now there is special concern about estrogenic chemicals among EDCs in the aquatic environment Nath et al 2007;Soto et al 1995).…”

“…The ovaries of female fishes that fail to spawn become atretic shortly after the spawning period (Guraya, 1994). Ovarian atresia of female fishes has been suggested to associate with several factors, including overcrowding and heavy metal concentration (Levavi-sivan et al, 2004); higher temperature (Saxena &Sandhu, 1994 andPankhurst et al, 1996); paucity of males (Tripple & Harvey, 1990); elevated pesticide (Sukumar & Karpaganapathy, 1992); dietary deficiencies (Kjesbu et al, 1991 andCerda et al, 1995); cyanide compounds (Alne-Na-Ei, 1997); confinement of fishes (Coward et al, 1998); sediment contamination (Alne-Na-Ei & Rady, 1998); spawning success (Levavi-sivan et al, 2004) and polluting chemicals or global warming (Unal et al, 2007).…”
