“…These results indicated that somatic/anatomical differentiation (formation of ovarian lumen) preceded germinal/cytological differentiation (germ cell meiosis). Similar results were reported in Paralichthys orbignyanus (Radonic and Macchi, ), Zoarces viviparous (Rasmussen et al, ), and Scomber japonicus (Kobayashi et al, ). However, in other species such as Monopterus albus (He et al, ), Chapalichthys encaustus (Guerrero‐Estévez and Moreno‐Mendoza, ), Salvelinus leucomaenis (Nakamura, ), Tilapia mossambica (Nakamura, ), and Pimephales promelas (Uguz, ), the opposite phenomenon (germinal differentiation preceded somatic differentiation) had been reported to occur.…”

“…At the present, even several researches on sex differentiation and gonadal development have been reported in cultural P. olivaceus , the timing and morphology of sex differentiation were described roughly by histology and the prominent sign of the beginning of ovarian differentiation was identified as the formation of ovarian cavity (Peng et al, 2009; Radonic and Macchi, ). While the process of ovarian differentiation and oogenesis in germinal epithelium, including the migration of PGCs, the establishment of gonadal ridges and the changes of germ cell number are still not clear in P. olivaceus .…”

“…Slices of each sample were mounted on glass slides, stained with haematoxylin and counter‐stained with eosin (HE staining) to determine the developmental stage of gonads. Details of the methods can be found in Radonic & Macchi () and Sun et al (). The remaining slices of each sample were prepared for in situ hybridization analysis.…”

“…There is increasing interest in the culture of this species due to its high demand, elevated market price and meat quality. Studies related to physiology (Bianchini, Wasielesky Jr & Miranda 1996; Wasielesky Jr, Bianchini & Miranda 1998; Sampaio & Bianchini 2002), reproduction (Lanes, Okamoto, Cavalcanti, Collares, Campos, Des‐champs, Robaldo, Marins & Sampaio 2008; Sampaio, Robaldo & Bianchini 2008; Radonic 2009), embryology (Cerqueira 2005), larviculture (Sampaio, Freitas, Okamoto, Louzada, Rodrigues & Robaldo 2007) and grow‐out (Sampaio, Bianchini & Cerqueira 2001) support the development of P. orbignyanus culture.…”
