“…NORMAL OVULATION At one time it was thought that there were three human gonadotrophic hormones, but the human anterior pituitary gland is now considered to produce only two such hormones-the follicle-stimulating and the luteinizing. Bahn et al, in 1953, demonstrated the presence of these two hormones and their subsequent clinical use sequentially has produced ovulation, and has confirmed that they are the only ones necessary to induce ovulation and a functioning corpus luteum in the normal female.
