Collaborative learning is a powerful method to fostering engagement and meaningful learning experiences within academic writing instruction, promoting participation critical thinking & skill development. In this vein, computer-mediated collaborative writing has been increasingly integrated into the classroom using tools like Google Docs. However, there is still limited research focused on understating the benefits and challenges of Google Docs for academic writing instruction, especially outside the second language learning classroom.Based on quantitative survey data from tertiary students in Guyana, this chapter explores the benefits and challenges associated with using Google Docs in academic writing instruction. The results show that that Google Docs offers a versatile platform that aligns with the evolving needs of modern educational practices, contributing to learning and academic writing skill development. However, for maximal impact, educators must also confront challenges that may surface, such as ensuring equitable participation and overcoming resistance to new technologies.
