“…The biosynthetic steps of gossypol have been extensively studied (Wagner et al, 2012;Tian et al, 2018;Lin et al, 2023); however, the synthetic site of gossypol remains controversial. Researchers have reported that the gland-contained terpenoids are either 'produced in the roots and transported and stored in New Phytologist the pigment gland of the aboveground tissues' or 'produced in a localized manner and retained therein' (Cai et al, 2010;Pandeya et al, 2022).…”

“…The recent efforts to study the relationship between the pigment gland and gland-contained terpenoids have progressed much, yielding an interesting novel theory that the root is not the source of gossypol and the related terpenoids in the aerial tissues of cotton. Pandeya et al (2022) performed grafted transgenic cotton with ultra-low gossypol cottonseed as the scion on a WT rootstock. The study found that gossypol produced in WT roots failed to replenish the gossypol content of the ultra-low gossypol cottonseed, implying that the gossypol accumulation in the aboveground parts is unrelated to the roots.…”
