Crowds have diverse meanings and serve varied functions for their participants and observers. To make sense of this diversity, the ontology of crowds can be understood through two dimensions: (1) global/collective processes versus local/individual processes; and (2) symbolic benefits/costs versus concrete benefits/costs. Combining these dimensions yields four ideal types: crowds as symbols, crowds as identities, crowds as networks, and crowds as power. This essay explores how people relate to crowds from these perspectives and the political implications of their doing so.

This study investigates the implications of increased internet penetration on demand in the context of pharmaceutical prescribing. The internet has changed the information and tools available to make decisions in complex tasks such as those made by physicians, and any impact on prescribing patterns has implications for the marketing activities of drug manufacturers, necessitating a strategic rethink of business practices. This study conceptualizes the prescription decision-making process through the lens of expectancy value theory. The unique research design allows for the observation of contrasting internet penetration rates of geographically distributed physicians over an extended time period in multiple drug categories. Modeling physician behavior as a combination of learning, peer effects, and face-to-face detailing by pharmaceutical firms, the study finds that the growth of the internet has a significant moderating impact on detailing efforts. Interestingly, the study also documents the interaction between learning and peer effects, as well as how the internet ultimately reduces reliance on prior prescription behavior (prescribing inertia) for the four Cardiovascular drug categories under consideration. We discuss the implications of these findings for R&D managers, marketers, and policymakers.

Information and communication technologies hold immense potential to enhance our lives and societal well-being. However, digital spaces have also emerged as a fertile ground for propaganda operations and fake news campaigns, which pose a threat to societal harmony. Despite the fact that this dark side is acknowledged in the literature, little is known about the diverse influence of disinformation operations by a variety of actors. In addition, internet censorship and social media monitoring efforts have largely been accused of stifling personal liberties. The current study builds on these gaps and challenges the status quo by drawing on complexity theory and utilizing fsQCA for a cross-country investigation of the influence of a variety of disinformation campaigns and hate speech in polarizing societies. In doing so, it offers a balanced perspective on internet censorship and social media monitoring as necessary evils to combat the disinformation menace and sheds light on the definitive role of foreign disinformation and hate speech. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.
