GPS Monitoring of the Tropical Storm Delta along the Canary Islands Track, November 28-29, 2005

Abstract: In this article we analyze the variations of the Zenith Tropospheric Delay (ZTD) and its components, Zenith Hydrostatic Delay (ZHD) and Zenith Wet Delay (ZWD) recorded by the GPS reference stations in the area of the Canary Islands during the passing of the tropical storm Delta on November 28 and 29, 2005. During this event, we observed that all GPS stations experienced significant increases of the ZWD value of over 100 mm and a decrease in the ZHD values of about 30 mm. The increase of the normal ZWD values w… Show more

“…Thus, GPS system appears at this moment as one of the most powerful technique to study PWV (Hagemann et al, 2003;De Haan S. de, 2006;Wang et al, 2007;Heise et al, 2009). It has already been used in recent studies to analyze its annual cycle (Jin and Luo, 2009), the diurnal cycle (Ortiz de Galisteo et al, 2011), the long-term trends (Nilsson and Elgered, 2008), the monitoring of meteorological episodes (Champollion et al, 2004;Seco et al, 2009) or the improvement in precipitation forecasting (Marcus et al, 2007).…”

“…Notwithstanding the above, hurricanes can occur all year round (except in March). Less commonly, they can form or turn into tropical or extra-tropical storms, generally in areas further away in the Caribbean and closer to the Canary Islands [11].…”

“…Thus, observed changes in ZTD are commonly attributed to water content variation in the troposphere. This parameter is used to study changes in the water vapour content due to various meteorological events and applications such as in numerical weather prediction (Bocolari et al 2002;Seco et al 2009;Jin et al 2007;Akilan et al 2015a). In this paper, we study the perturbations in the tropospheric water content in terms of ZTD changes, over the northern margin of East Antarctica during the period of intense snow fall event in June 2004.…”
