Grafting in reaction of polyethylene and poly(maleic anhydride)

Abstract: synopsisPolyethylene has been grafted in a reaction with poly(maleic anhydride) in the presence of radical initiators. The role of oxygen, the comparison of the effectiveness of benzoyl peroxide and AIBN, and the kinetics of the reaction suggest that side chains are formed via a combination of the macroradicals of both polymers.

“…The percent SAn grafted was determined to be 1.25 wt %. The above results are in agreement with those of several researchers who have used FTIR, both qualitatively to identify the presence of SAn residues 7,8,10,11,22 and quantitatively to determine the percent MAn grafted in polymer 18,[23][24][25] and model systems.…”

“…The increasing trend is probably due to complexation of silk with the monomer and to the gel effect. 12 The decreasing trend at higher concentration range is probably due to the faster rate of combination and disproportionation of PMMA macroradical versus their combination with silk. 13 …”

“…The initiation of the grafting involves radicals originated from peroxide decomposition or from thermal and mechanical processes. The radicals abstract hydrogen from the polymer chain, 7 resulting in macroradicals. MAH molecules add to these macroradicals forming MAH radicals covalently bonded to the polymer.…”
