Grafting of ethylene–ethyl acrylate–maleic anhydride terpolymer with amino‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane during reactive processing

Abstract: An ethylene-ethyl acrylate-maleic anhydride copolymer (EEAMA) is grafted with aminopropyl polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via melt reactive mixing at 140°C. The materials produced split into two components based on their solubility in acetone. The acetone soluble material is highly enriched in PDMS, whereas the insoluble material contains levels of PDMS that are lower than the proportions added to the reaction mixture. It was found that for all reaction mixtures the PDMS content in the acetone insoluble solids inc… Show more

“…Moreover, PDMS tends to migrate toward the surface due to its low surface free energy (around 19 mN/m at 20 °C). This effect results in a surface covered by a hydrophobic liquid PDMS that causes undesired adsorption of hydrophobic contaminants and poor surface properties 17…”

“…A PDMS grafted copolymer, which can be potentially applied as a processing agent or a surface property modifier, was synthesized via reactive melt mixing of ethylene-ethyl acrylate-maleic anhydride terpolymer (EEAMA) and aminopropyl terminated PDMS (McManus et al, 2006).…”

“…The reactive PDMS-modified polyolefin (PMPO) compounds were obtained by mixing 100 parts by weight of EEAMA copolymer (EEAMA, Lotader 8200, Atofina) with 10, 25, and 50 parts aminopropyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS, PS512, 0.0776 mmole equivalents of amine per gram (M W ¼ 26,000), viscosity: 800-1200 cS, United Chemical Technologies) in a Haake Rheocord 90 batch mixer at 1408C as described elsewhere [21]. PMPO with 0, 10, 25, and 50 phr PDMS are designated as PMPO-0, PMPO-10, PMPO-25, and PMPO-50, respectively.…”

“…We previously reported a practical and cost-effective method to obtain PDMS-polyolefin compounds by reactive melt mixing of an ethylene-ethyl acrylate-maleic anhydride (EEAMA) copolymer and aminopropyl terminated PDMS [21]. In this study, the PDMS-modified polyolefin (PMPO) is used as a processing aid for the extrusion of a LLDPE.…”
