Grafting of Functionalized Water Soluble Polymers on Gold Surfaces

Abstract: Stimuli-responsive water soluble acrylamide polymers which exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST), or an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) were prepared by free radical polymerization, or by chemical modification of precursor polymers. The obtained nonionic thermosensitive polymers are employed for the preparation of thin hydrogel films on gold surfaces. Two different strategies were studied. The first one consists of the immobilization of polymers functionalized with disulfide end-group… Show more

“…Two series of poly(acrylamide)s were synthesized. In the first series, the disulfide-functionalized diazo initiator S was employed to incorporate a metal-anchoring moiety in the hydrophilic polymers (Scheme ) . Thus, polymers P1S and P2S were obtained by free radical homopolymerization of 1 , or by copolymerization of a 95:5 (mol/mol) mixture of 2 and 1 , respectively.…”

“…Polymer Synthesis. The synthesis of the disulfide-functionalized initiators was reported previously. , The synthesis of polymers P1S and P2S with a disulfide-functionalized initiator is described elsewhere . Reference polymers P1I and P2I were obtained by the analogous procedures employing the initiator azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN).…”

“…In addition to the electrolyte-dependent behavior, another interesting characteristic of the polybetaines is their temperature-dependent phase transition. Polybetaines aggregate in aqueous solutions at room temperature and dissolve abruptly when heated to over their respective upper critical solution temperature (UCST). N , N ‘-dimethyl(methylmethacryloyl ethyl) ammonium propane sulfonate (DMAPS) is a sulfobetaine monomer. Surface graft copolymerization of DMAPS with polymer substrates, such as polyethylene (PE), polyaniline (PANi), and PC, has been carried out to enhance their surface functionalities.…”
