Grafting ofN,N′-methylenebisacrylamide onto cellulose using Co(III)-acetylacetonate complex in aqueous medium

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The grafting of N,NЈ-methylenebisacrylamide (N,NЈ-MBA) onto cellulose is carried out using the cobaltacetylacetonate complex (Co(acac) 3 ) under nitrogen atmosphere at 40°C. The rate of graft copolymerization has been studied as a function of [N,NЈ-MBA], [Co(acac) 3 ], and temperature. The activation energy of grafting is found to be 156.0 k J mol Ϫ1 within the temperature range of 30 -60°C. The effect of perchloric acid, methanol, and surfactants on graft yield has also been studied and results are s… Show more

“…Cellulose is one of the most popular natural polymers, which has been widely used in industries and daily lives. To further expand the industrial applications of the cellulose, modification methods of physical and chemical properties of the cellulose have been continuously studied to investigate the required properties 1–5. Graft copolymerization of vinyl polymers onto cellulose is one of the most extensively studied procedures.…”

“…Different from some other metal ions used for initiating graft polymerizations, such as Co 3+ [30], [31], Ce 4+ ions introduce active sites to reductants by a single electron-transfer process and the formation of homopolymer is prevented. Ce 4+ initiated grafting polymerization has been successfully employed to prepare polymer brushes on flat substrates [32].…”

“…A considerable number of studies on graft copolymerization of single monomers onto cellulose using different methods of initiation has been reported. [1][2][3][4][5] But graft copolymerization of binary mixtures of vinyl monomers has special importance in comparison to simple grafting of individual monomers. This technique of grafting of monomer mixtures has the advantage of creating grafted chains with tailor-made properties for specific applications.…”
