Grain Refinement through Shear Banding in Severely Plastic Deformed A206 Aluminum Alloy

Abstract: The present work is conducted to study the microstructure and texture evolutions in an as-cast A206 aluminum alloy after applying severe plastic deformation. Toward this end, the material is severely deformed through accumulative back extrusion (ABE) technique at 200 C and followed by assessing the room temperature mechanical properties of the products. The macro shear-bands formation in the highly strained regions can result in grain refinement through the geometric dynamic recrystallization mechanism. A sign… Show more

“…On the contrary, only a weak Raman signal of α-Al(OH) 3 at 659 cm −1 was detected in the as-received sample immersed in the same solution. The nonappearance of noticeable Raman bands of Al(OH) 3 in the as-received samples submerged in the solution is likely a sign of fewer corrosion products on these samples when compared with the ECAP samples [59].…”

“…GSFEs for the principal components of aluminum alloys series 1xxx (Si), 2xxx (Cu, Mg), 4xxx (Si), 5xxx (Mg), 6xxx (Mg, Si), and 7xxx (Mg, Cu, Zn) have been reported [12,18,19]. SFEs of Al alloys with Sr, Sc, Y, Ge, Fe, Ti, Li, Si, Mg, Cu, and Zn have also been calculated as a function of temperature [20] Mechanical properties of Al-Sc [21], Al-Zn [22], Al-Cu-Mn-Mg-Zn-Fe [23], and Al-Zn-Cu-Zr [8] alloys have recently been investigated. GSFE has not been calculated for Al alloys with elements, such as Sc, Zr, Mn, Fe.…”

“…According to Heidarzadeh et al [24], Patel et al [25], Patel et al [26], and Patel et al [27], these grains are formed as result of the combined effect of heat and intensive mechanical deformation through a dynamic recrystallization process contributing to the mechanical properties improvement. This is of special importance in Al alloys which due to their high stackingfault energy [28], cannot be effectively refined by thermomechanical-induced recrystallization mechanism [29].…”
