Grain refining mechanisms in magnesium alloys — An overview

Abstract: The literature on mechanisms of grain refinement in magnesium alloys is reviewed with regard to two broad groups of alloys: aluminiumbearing and aluminium-free alloys. While a low level zirconium addition significantly reduces the grain size of the aluminium-free alloys, the understanding of mechanisms of grain refinement in aluminium-bearing alloys is poor and in some cases probably confusing due to the interaction between impurity elements and aluminium in affecting the potency of nucleant particles. Mechani… Show more

“…The size of block and particles magnesium-zirconium master alloy is about 20 mm and 20 mm, respectively. But, in fact, master alloy contains a large number of fine zirconium particles due to the limited solubility of zirconium in magnesium [17]. The block master alloy contains various size of zirconium particle clusters (10 mm -120 mm) and isolated individual zirconium particles (under 30 mm), Figure 2a1.…”

“…Significant research has been conducted investigating grain refinement of Mg-Al alloys, such as melt superheating technique, the Elfinal processes, carbon inoculation, deliberate addition of alloying elements and other inoculants [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. Among these work, carbon inoculants are considered to be the most effective grain refiner for Mg-Al alloys, and have been used for decades.…”
