Grain-size distribution and subsurface mapping at the Setiu wetlands, Setiu, Terengganu

Abstract: A study was carried out around the lagoon and coastal area of Setiu wetlands to determine the general characteristics and grain-size distribution of their sediments. Sediment samples were collected from 39 stations of the lagoon area and 8 stations of the coastal area, and were analyzed for their sedimentological characteristics (mean, sorting, skewness and kurtosis). The sediment mean size ranged between 0.06-2.52 and 2.12-2.69 phi (Ø) for both lagoon and coastal sea-bottom sediments, respectively. Generally,… Show more

“…It is based on the reflected pulse waves from the beds of River or sea. These reflected waves have been recorded as seismic section, where consists of horizontal distance scale (m) and veritcal time Scale (msec) (Yaacob and Mustapa, 2010). The vertical Time Scale has been converted to depth scale (m) during the interpretation of seismic sections.…”

“…Dry sieve method was used in this study to give an insight about sediment grain size. Samples were dried for 24 h in an oven at range temperature between 60°C and 70°C as described in Rosnan and Zaini (2010). In this study, the dry sieve method is chosen because only sediments with grain size > 63m m were obtained.…”

“…was significantly more abundant in station 1, where the sediment was mainly composed of medium and coarse sand. Since the presence of coarser fractions in the sediment indicates a greater hydrodynamics (Yaacob & Mustapa, 2010), station 1 can be considered a more unstable environment where few species adapt, specializing in occupying these niches with more space between the grains, where other species cannot colonize. Thus, the dynamism and force of currents in the areas near the connection to the sea can be considered as determining factors for the dominance of a few species.…”
