In this study, the language-related ERP studies relevant to the functional role of the N400 and P600 in semantically anomalous sentences and the underlying reasons which may affect their functions were reviewed. Since their discovery, the N400 and P600 have been the most important language-related ERP components. The N400 has been mostly elicited as a result of processing sentences with lexical and semantic anomalies, but later on, in many studies instead of the expected lexical-semantic N400 effect, semantic anomalies elicited a P600 effect called semantic P600. However, the functional interpretation of these two ERP components has constantly been a matter of debate. Perhaps most notably, it is proposed that it is not just the N400 which is related to semantic anomalies but the P600 can also be reflected as a result of these kinds of anomalies. Reviewing the literature for explaining the functions of the two ERP components, the N400 and the P600, during the processing of semantic anomalies revealed that still there is a need for more research on language processing in order to make the researchers capable of describing the underlying factors influencing them, especially more focused investigations of the functional-anatomical and neurocomputational models may provide a clearer understanding of them. Moreover, any practical theory or model of the N400 and the P600 in language comprehension needs to consider the apparent inconsistencies in the elicitation pattern of the N400 and the P600 in order to successfully capture the full data spectrum.

This study investigates how linguistic and nonlinguistic information interacts in second language (L2) sentence processing. Previous studies argued that L2 behaviors might stem from how L2 speakers rely more on one type of information over another. However, direct attempts have not been made to test the (dis)agreement of different information types. To fill this gap, the present study explored the integration of definiteness and real-world knowledge. Experiment 1 showed that both first language (L1) speakers (n = 34) and advanced L2 speakers (n = 49) could use definiteness to predict unmentioned referents, but intermediate L2 speakers could not (n = 35). After confirming that L1 and L2 speakers shared the same real-world knowledge, Experiment 2 (n (L1) = 36, n (L2) = 43) showed that the two groups’ behaviors differed when linguistic and nonlinguistic information had to be processed simultaneously. The findings suggest that L2 speakers can process linguistic information in a targetlike manner only in the absence of usable nonlinguistic information.

La comprensión de oraciones y textos involucra fenómenos complejos en los que interviene tanto información específicamente lingüística como información extralingüística. Analizamos aquí cómo incide la ausencia de conocimiento previo sobre el mundo durante la comprensión de oraciones y, específicamente, si este factor modula el proceso en función del tipo de relación semántica: aditiva, temporal y causal. A partir de una tarea de comprensión de oraciones bajo un paradigma de lectura a ritmo propio, revisamos la Hipótesis de causalidad por defecto. Se registraron los tiempos de lectura y la precisión de respuesta a preguntas de comprensión. Los resultados muestran un efecto principal generado por la imposibilidad de involucrar conocimientos previos sobre el mundo e interacciones vinculadas con el tipo de relación semántica. Se exhibe una centralidad del eje temporo-causal también para la comprensión de información desconocida, aunque no todas las predicciones hechas por la Hipótesis de causalidad por defecto se sostienen para estos casos.
