Granular cell myoblastoma

Abstract: Ninety‐five patients with granular cell myoblastoma have been seen at Memorial Hospital from 1934‐1965. Their ages ranged from 11 months to 68 years, an average of 38.1 years. Symptoms were present from a few days to more than 5 years and principally consisted of the presence of a painless mass in 85 patients. The lesion is ubiquitous and of the 110 lesions, 51 arose in the head and neck, 19 in the arm, 24 in the chest wall and breast, 2 in the abdominal wall, 3 in the perineum, 7 in the leg, and 4 in miscella… Show more

“…Only 6 of 92 cases reported by Strong et al [2] and 5 of 118 reported by Lack et al [21] recurred, one after 10 years. Exceedingly rare malignant examples are reported and represent 1^2% of all granular cell tumors [2,40,41]. Clues to the diagnosis of malignancy are large size (>4^5 cm), numerous mitoses (>2=10 HPF), prominent spindling of cells, smaller size of cells, and necrosis.…”

“…In the bile ducts location according to the literature review GCTs are more frequent in black patients (65%), in females (91%) [2,21], and in younger patients (mean age of 34.7). The tumors occur as single localization: in common bile duct (50%), often in the intrapancreatic tract, in cystic duct (38%), in hepatic ducts (12%) [18,22]; exceptionally, multiple tumors may be found [23] as well as concomitant GCT in other locations [24].…”

“…The majority are benign, and a malignant variant accounts for only 1-3% of cases [3,4]. In a large series by Lack et al of 110 patients diagnosed with GCT, none were found to be malignant.…”

“…In a large series by Lack et al of 110 patients diagnosed with GCT, none were found to be malignant. Granular cell tumor is usually located in the head and neck with hand and peripheral nerve lesions being distinctly uncommon [3]. Lesions are most commonly found in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue, thus mimicking adnexal tumors.…”
