Granular cell tumor of stomach: A case report and review of literature

Abstract: Granular cell tumor (GCT) was described for the first time by Abrikosoff in 1926. It is a relatively rare neoplasm that may occur at many sites, but most commonly in the skin or soft tissues. The occurrence of GCT in the gastrointestinal tract is rare, accounting approximately for 8% of all tumors, among which the most common site is the esophagus, whereas gastric localization is very rare. Gastric GCTs can be solitary or, more frequently, associated with other gastrointestinal localization. Although GCTs are … Show more

“…It can occur in almost any part of the human body such as the oral cavity, breast, large intestine and stomach (Lack, et al ,1980;Patti et al, 2006;Huyskens and Geniets 2014;Zhang et al, 2014). For both GCT and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), the most common growth site in the oral cavity is the tongue (Neville, 2009).…”

“…6 Conventional endoscopic findings and EUS findings of carcinoid tumors are similar to GCTs, therefore differential diagnosis between GCTs and carcinoid tumors is very difficult. 7 Patti et al 8 reported a case of gastric GCT in 2006, and reviewed 5 cases of gastric GCTs. Since 2006, eleven cases of gastric GCT have been reported.…”

“…Granular cell tumors are usually benign in behavior, although some malignant cases (a single gastric case) have also been reported. Endosonographically they present as a hypoechoic, heterogeneous well-demarcated mass with smooth borders, arising from the second or third wall layer [8,12,13,28] .…”
