Granulomatous rhinitis associated with Pythium insidiosum infection in sheep

Abstract: The rhinitis and granulomatous lymphadenitis was characterised histopathologically by caseous necrosis with proliferation of connective tissue, a neutrophilic and eosinophilic infiltrate, epithelioid cells, multinucleate giant cells, and irregular, moderately septate and ramified hyphae, frequently surrounded by abundant granular and eosinophilic material with radial disposition (Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon). Lesions from the dorsal and lateral regions of the nose were collected aseptically and transported to… Show more

“…In sheep, the ulcerative cutaneous form (Tabosa et al 2004) has been verified, but metastasis can develop as well, affecting lymph nodes and lungs (Souza et al 2008). Recently, cases of granulomatous rhinitis were verified (Santurio et al 2008;Souza et al 2008, Portela et al 2010, Carrera et al 2013, with the destruction of the hard palate, and reaching the nasal vestibule, resulting in a fistula. Microscopically, it is characterized by the development of granulomatous lesions, where it is possible to observe necrotic tissue, Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon and inflammatory infiltration (Carrera et al 2013).…”

Conidiobolus spp.…”

“…In Northeastern Brazil, a differential diagnose must be made from a disease promoting very similar clinical signs as granulotous rhinitis promoted by Pythium insidiosum (SANTURIO et al, 2008), whilst enzootic nasal adenocarcinoma of sheep is diagnosed in many countries of Europe (SVARA et al, 2006). The isolation of C. coronatus was crucial to confirm the presumptive diagnosis.…”
