Grape seed powder increases gastrointestinal motility

Abstract: Grape seed is an important natural bioactive product with various health benefits. Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) are pacemaker cells in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The present study investigated the effects of grape seed powder (GSP) on ICC properties and GI motility. GSP depolarized the pacemaker potentials of ICCs in a dose-dependent manner. Y25130 or SB269970 slightly inhibited GSP-induced effects. However, Y25130 and SB269970 together completely blocked GSP-induced effects. In the presence of inh… Show more

“…Grape seed is a major source of catechins and proanthocyanidins, which is readily inexpensive, and beneficial to human health (Choi et al., 2022). Grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSPs) treatment decreased CNE‐2 cell viability and significantly induced G2/M phase cell cycle arrest in human NPC.…”

“…Currently, drug therapy, such as laxatives and prokinetics, is still the main treatment method for GI motility disorders, with some limitations, including the single target of action, susceptibility to diarrhea, and high recurrence rate after drug discontinuation [ 4 , 5 ]. More new therapeutic options have been researched, such as probiotics, prebiotics, microbial metabolites, and natural ingredients from plants [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
