Graphene and Graphene/Polymer Composites as the Most Efficient Protective Coatings for Steel, Aluminum and Copper in Corrosive Media: A Review of Recent Studies

Abstract: The cover picture shows a graphical image of modified graphene nanosheets coated on metal surfaces as a protective layer against metal corrosive medium (red spheres). Its applications in various industries, such as gas, oil and automobiles, have been shown in the background. See the Personal Account by Ali Ehsani et al. (DOI: 10.1002/tcr.201900021).

“…Graphene coating applications have multiple advantages such as increasing the resistance to oxygen and water, improving electrical and thermal conductivities, increasing the hydrophobicity on the surface, and preventing scratching and abrasion. However, the presence of the polymer along with graphene helps their use in coating applications [ 191 , 192 , 193 , 194 , 195 ]. Graphene dispersion in DMF prepared by the jet cavitation method has been used for coating applications, to coat Kapton which enhances the atomic oxygen erosion resistance [ 196 ].…”

“…3 Detection of metal specimens from corrosion has attracted significant attention. 4 With the advances in anticorrosion technology, many corrosion prevention techniques have been developed to increase the service life of metals. Several methods protect metals from corrosive environments by applying corrosion inhibitors or coatings.…”

“…Recently, as a potential remedy to resolve this issue, graphene (Gr) in the form of a thin layer (i.e., Gr coating) has received extensive attention due to its desirable combination of mechanical robustness, thermal conductivity, and tribological properties [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. According to the results, Gr coated on various substrates, including polymers [ 10 , 11 ], aluminum alloys [ 12 ], and steels [ 4 , 13 , 14 ], can effectively improve their frictional and wear resistance properties. In addition, there are several factors affecting the improvement of both properties, such as Gr film thickness [ 15 ], structural defects of Gr [ 9 ], surface chemistry of Gr [ 16 , 17 ], and substrate properties [ 18 ].…”
