Graphene Oxide as a Novel Evenly Continuous Phase Matrix for TOF-SIMS

Abstract: Using matrix to enhance the molecular ion signals for biomolecule identification without loss of spatial resolution caused by matrix crystallization is a great challenge for the application of TOF-SIMS in real-world biological research. In this report, graphene oxide (GO) was used as a matrix for TOF-SIMS to improve the secondary ion yields of intact molecular ions ([M + H]). Identifying and distinguishing the molecular ions of lipids (m/z >700) therefore became straightforward. The spatial resolution of TOF-S… Show more

“… 64 , 65 However, depth profiling combined with metal-assisted SIMS can only be performed while using a nonconventional experimental setup. 66 The ionization yield can also be increased by depositing ionic liquids 67 or graphene oxide 68 on the sample surface. Furthermore, the samples can be mixed with specific matrices, 69 71 but with this approach we lose the surface sensitivity.…”

“…6 In recent years, it has been widely used in materials science, bioimaging, herbal medicines, and particulate matter. [7][8][9][10][11][12][13] TOF-SIMS is also applied in the field of geochemistry. [14][15][16][17] Temperature programmed desorption (TPD), which can distinguish between types of mercury based on the characteristic pyrolysis temperature of the specific mercury form, has been used to identify Hg compounds in soil contaminates, 18 sediment samples, 19 iron-based sorbents, 20 and gypsum.…”

“…Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a surface-sensitive analytical method. It is a powerful technique for analysing and directly mapping chemical components on the surfaces of solid samples [9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. In combination with a ToF analyser, ToF-SIMS provides several advantages compared with other mass spectrometric and surface-sensitive techniques.…”
