Graphomotor skills in children with prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: A population‐based study in remote Australia

Abstract: Overall, graphomotor skills were poor in this cohort, but children with FASD performed significantly worse than children without PAE. Findings suggest the need for improved occupational therapy services for children in remote regions and evaluation of graphomotor skills in children with PAE.

“…Similar to the findings of Miller et al. (2017) who reviewed consumer engagement in health and medical research, the very limited Australian instances of comprehensive consumer engagement in health‐related research were with Indigenous communities (Doney et al., 2017; Wagner et al., 2017). “…Culturally safe engagement strategies included community leadership in project development and approval, employment of local Aboriginal community researchers to recruit and support participants, and collaboration between community members and researchers to translate findings. High levels of community engagement were also incorporated into a study which aimed to describe the graphomotor performance of Aboriginal children from a remote community (Doney et al., 2017).…”

“…It is interesting to note that Australian Aboriginal individuals with FASD have been found to have motor skill impairments (Doney et al, 2017; Lucas et al, 2016a; Lucas et al, 2016b). However, in our study, 66% of Aboriginal participants did not have this impairment when compared with 20.1% of non‐Aboriginal participants.…”

“…As the child grows, other deficits may emerge. Fine motor impairment [105] with subnormal graphomotor skills [106] and disturbance of visual‐motor integration and visual perception [107] have been noted. Gross motor impairment [108] with gait abnormalities [109] may develop.…”
