Grassland Conservation Effectiveness of National Nature Reserves in Northern China

Abstract: Grasslands are crucial ecosystem biomes for breeding livestock and combatting climate change. By 2018, the national nature reserves (NNRs) in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR) had constituted 8.55% of the land area. However, there is still a knowledge gap about their effectiveness in grasslands. Based on a multiyear time series of the growing season composite from 2000 to 2020, we proposed an effectiveness score to assess the effectiveness of the NNRs, using the 250 m MOD13Q1 NDVI data with Theil–Sen… Show more

“…NDVI data of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) MOD13Q1 product, collected from Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform, were analysed in this investigation. MOD13Q1 dataset are considered, since it has already been widely and successfully used in previous vegetation trends investigation [31] [32]. Time series of NDVI 16-day composites with a spatial resolution of 250 m were gathered for the 2000-2022 period.…”

“…These represent the innovations in our research ideology and analytical methodology. Thus far, many appraisals of conservation effectiveness have focused solely on either a single category of PA [21,29] or involved a plethora of disparate PA categories [19,[30][31][32][33][34]. Therefore, our study aims to analyze differences in the effects of various PA types through a comparative analysis of two major types (forest and wetland PAs).…”

“…Landscape indexes have been extensively employed to assess the effectiveness of PAs [40][41][42]. The spatial and temporal variation of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is one of the most cost-effective methods for assessing ecological effectiveness [34,[43][44][45]. The Google Earth Engine (GEE) Cloud Platform can swiftly and accurately process remote sensing images using its robust data calculation function.…”
