ResumenEl objetivo del estudio consistió en obtener las características psicométricas de una escala de emociones compuestas hacia la conducta de cuidado del agua, desarrollada a partir de los supuestos de la teoría cognitiva de las emociones. Fueron analizadas las respuestas de una muestra intencional de 376 estudiantes universitarios de la Ciudad de México. Mediante un análisis factorial confirmatorio de segundo orden, con el método robusto de máxima verosimilitud, se ratificó la pertinencia de una agrupación final de tres dimensiones, alcanzando bondad de ajuste adecuada, y consistencia interna. La evidencia generada permite asumir que se cuenta, dentro del contexto mexicano, un instrumento válido y confiable que evalúa tres emociones específicas (gratitud, enojo y remordimiento) hacia acciones de consumo de agua. Palabras clave: cuidado del agua, emociones, conducta pro-ambiental, psicología ambiental AbstractThis study had the purpose of obtain the psychometric characteristics of a scale of composite emotions to the water conservation behavior, which was developed considering assumptions of cognitive theory of emotions.Responses from a purposive sample of 376 undergraduate students from Mexico City were analyzed. Through a second-order factor analysis, estimated by the robust maximum likelihood method, a final group of three dimensions was ratified, achieving accurate goodness of fit levels and internal consistency. The evidence generated allows for assume that there is, within the Mexican context, a valid and reliable instrument addressed to evaluate three specific emotions (gratitude, anger and remorse) towards actions of water consumption.

Feeling grateful to nature for its bountiful benefits to humans and wanting to give thanks to nature is a familiar theme in personal stories and cultural rituals, but this emotional experience has rarely been understood scientifically. The present research fills this gap by presenting a theory of gratitude to nature. Findings from four correlational studies and one experiment robustly support its propositions. Gratitude to nature can be conceptualized as a form of benefit-triggered gratitude. The distinction between trait and state gratitude to nature was found to be valid, and both forms of gratitude can be reliably measured. Trait gratitude to nature was associated with interpersonal gratitude as well as a number of constructs relevant to the human-nature relationship (e.g., experience with nature, connectedness to nature, anthropomorphism). Also, gratitude to nature strongly and robustly motivated not only intention but also actual performance of pro-environmental behavior. The theory offers novel insights into the understanding of humans’ relations with nature and responses to environmental problems. It also suggests potential directions for environmental education and communication.

Can self-transcendent positive emotions facilitate bonds with nature?

Self-transcendent positive emotions play a foundational role in social cognition through binding humans to others. In this article, theoretical and emerging empirical evidence is presented in support of the hypothesis that self-transcendent positive emotions may also facilitate bonds with the natural world. This is suggested to occur due to the ability of self-transcendent emotions to direct attention away from the self, facilitate connections with novel social targets, and reduce defensive distancing from nature caused by death anxiety and disgust. It is concluded that further research is needed to clarify the effects of discrete self-transcendent emotions on connectedness to nature, as well as the magnitude and duration of these effects.
