Gravitational fields of cosmic membranes

Abstract: The gravitational field resulting from static scalar field configurations is investigated by means of coupled Einstein-scalar equations. Imposing plane symmetry, the author obtains a family of exact soliton-like stable solutions representing thick cosmic membranes in a spacetime which is flat at spatial infinity. The physical properties of the cosmic membrane (such as thickness, surface energy density, and interior gravitational field) are derived without detailed knowledge of the scalar field, and it is shown… Show more

The space time of cosmological thick domain walls in general relativity has been studied by Ipser and Sikivie (1984), Garfinkle and Gregory (1990), Mukherjee (1993) and Bonjour et al (1999). Lyra (1951) proposed a modification of Riemannian geometry by introducing gauge function into the structure less manifold, as a result of which the cosmological constant arises naturally from the geometry.…”

“…After the original work by Vilenkin, Ipser and Sikivie [7,8] for thin walls, attempts focused on trying to find a perturbative expansion in the wall thickness [6,10]. With the proposition by Hill, Schramn and Fry [11] of a late phase transition with thick domain walls, there was some effort in finding exact thick solution [12,13]. Recently, Bonjour et al [14] considered gravitating thick domain wall solutions with planar and reflection symmetry in the Goldstone model.…”

“…Many authors [5,6] have discussed non-static solutions of the Einstein scalar field equations for thick domain wall. In these solutions the energy scalar is independent of time while the metric tensor depends on both space and time.…”
