“…Franck (1995) already showed that the rotifer Brachionus could induce colonies in S. obliquus too, which was confirmed by Lurling and Van Donk (1997a). The latter also found colony induction in S. obliquus (formerly S. acutus) expo- Notes : Yes = colonies induced ; No = no colony induction found ; ± = possible colony induction 1 ) Van Donk et al (1999) 2) Hessen & Van Donk (1993) 3) Lampert et al (1994) 4) Lürling (1999a) 5) Lürling & Beekman (1999) (7)sed to filtrate from the cladocera Bosmina longirostris and Daphnia galeata as well as in filtrate from the copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis. Van Donk et al (1999) listed 14 species that had been examined at that time for the ability to induce the formation of protective colonies in Scenedesmus.…”

“…Algal stock cultures were maintained in 300 ml cellulose plug stoppered Erlenmeyer flasks on a modified WC (Woods Hole modified CHU10)-medium (Lu¨rling & Beekman, 1999) in a climate controlled room at 20°C in continuous light of 60-lmol quanta m )2 s )1 (PAR).…”

“…The green alga Scenedesmus obliquus SAG 276/3a originates from the culture collection of the University of Göttingen (Germany). Semicontinuous stock cultures of these algae were maintained in 300 ml Erlenmeyer flasks, closed with a cellulose plug, containing 150 ml of modified WC (Woods Hole Chu)-medium (Lürling & Beekman 1999) with vitamins added (Biotin B1 and B12 at 50 ng l -1 , Thiamine HCL at 100 ng l -1 ). The flasks were placed in climate controlled room at 20°C in continuous light of 60-µmol quanta m -2 s -1 provided from above by fluorescent cool-white tubes (Osram L 36W/21-840).…”
