Great Desire for Extended Life and Health amongst the American Public

Abstract: People want to live long, healthy lives. Previous surveys suggest very limited interest in much longer lifespans, but we show that stipulating good health changes responses to favor longer lives by an order of magnitude. Advances in aging research hold out hope for greatly slowed aging with associated good health. Understanding the public's desires correctly is important to avoid misallocation of resources for research.

“…On the other side, 77% of the individuals not wanting to reach 100 years stated reasons expressing negative attitudes toward life in very old age. In a quantitative study based on a representative sample, Donner and colleagues (2016) assessed responses to two items: “How long do you wish to live?” and “If you could be physically and mentally the same as in your 20s, how long would like to live?” In response to the first item two-thirds (65%) preferred to live until 85 years, while under the condition of being healthy about 80% expressed a wish to live to at least 120 years (53% desired an unlimited lifetime).…”

“…THE AIM OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE is to prevent the occurrence or halting of disease and averting resulting complications . With a general increase in health awareness and a desire to live longer and healthier, a greater utilization of preventive medicine measures can be expected. The lack of ionizing radiation makes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) attractive for whole‐body screening, aiming at the detection of disease before its symptomatic manifestation .…”

“…When the extended healthspan was postulated in questionnaire design, responses largely favored longer life. For example, in a recent survey by Donner et al 20% of respondents wanted to live to the age of 85, while 42% wanted that their life expectancy would not be limited [ 69 ].…”
