Green Berets and the Symbolic Meaning of Heroism

94EDITOR'S NOTE: Community in this article is located not only within the historical traditions and symbols of the Army, but in the specific context of the Green Beret unit. The organization uses, displays and modifies traditionally sanctioned symbols of patriotism and honor, as do the members themselves. Although relying in part on Durkheimian notions, Cockerham also attempts to explicate what lies behind these symbols by showing how tacit and taken-for-granted meanings guide the practices and actions of members. The ambivalence with which heroism is viewed in American society both structures and supports the views of the members of the Green Beret community as well as undermines and makes ambivalent their own roles. They must continuously negotiate their roles in and outside of the community.
