Sustainable software development, deployment, and usage will minimize the burden on the economy, environment, and technology along with having positive effects on human beings, and society. Green and Sustainable Software Engineering processes, principles, and practices provide the basis for sustainable software development. However, the continually increasing customer choices and requirements, environmental concerns, and competition among software development industries demand for the availability of reliable and complete sustainable software development approaches to develop lifelong sustainable software. This paper presents a sustainable software engineering framework, named as LAGSSE, by integrating the Agile, Lean and Green approaches. The framework is based on the “OntoSuSD” ontology to represent the diverse Agile, Lean and Green approaches for achieving the software sustainability dimensions, goals, and enablers. The proposed framework is validated using the Delphi method using the expert opinion scenario which has proved LAGSSE as an efficient framework for supporting sustainable software development. The LAGSSE framework is aimed to facilitate the software developers, academia, experts, and policy makers in the software industry, institutions, and government to make policies and develop sustainable software products according to their software sustainability goals and requirements.

The urgency of sustainability concerns has intensified in recent years, sounding alarm bells over the planet's condition and prompting nearly every industry and practice to reassess their contributions to the climate crisis. Software engineering is not immune to this scrutiny. Software engineering practices significantly affect the environment and may not align with sustainability goals. Although sustainability is a relatively recent focus in software engineering, it has garnered increased attention, with numerous studies addressing various concerns and practices. Green software engineering aspires to develop dependable, enduring, and sustainable software that fulfills user requirements while minimizing environmental impacts. As this green paradigm gains traction in software engineering, practitioners must incorporate sustainability considerations into future software designs. However, despite the surge in green software engineering research, a universally accepted definition and framework remain elusive. This paper outlines green software engineering by explaining its principles, challenges, and methods for measuring and evaluating software effectiveness in this context.

Placing sustainability at the core of computing practices, the industry is poised to pioneer positive changes and create a cleaner and more sustainable world for future generations. The environmentally sustainable computing (ESC) framework is introduced in this paper as an innovative solution to revolutionize sustainability practices across various computing domains and cover multiple aspects of sustainable information technology (IT). The ESC framework includes the entire lifecycle of computing systems, including critical stages such as design, development, monitoring, refactoring, and regulatory compliance. Through the adoption of the ESC framework, academia and industry stakeholders can gain a powerful tool to evaluate and measure sustainability factors across different computing domains and can integrate eco-friendly computing principles and patterns throughout their products and services. This can significantly reduce their carbon footprint while complying with environmental regulations. In addition to presenting the ESC framework, the paper showcases real-world use cases. The first involves a leading Italian bank, emphasizing the significance of monitoring and compliance in achieving sustainable solutions within carbon-aware computing. The second use case explores resource efficiency optimization in Kubernetes clusters, illustrating how the ESC framework aligns with cloud infrastructure management trends.
