Green Synthesis of Dimethyl Carbonate from CO2 and Methanol: New Strategies and Industrial Perspective

Abstract: Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is a commonly used and environmentally sustainable chemical compound and intermediate in a variety of industrial applications. To date, several large‐scale industrial DMC synthesis routes have been developed, including methanol phosgenation, transesterification, and oxidative carbonylation of methanol. However, these manufacturing routes have several disadvantages, such as the use of hypertoxic phosgene as raw material, costly processing, and explosion risks. The most encouraging and e… Show more

“…At the end, target molecules adsorb on the material's surface and undergo charge injection and desorption to make final products. [59,[67][68][69][70] Now, many semiconductors exist for photocatalysis with tunable electronic and crystal structures. Although remarkable achievements are done to optimize the photocatalysis process, many photocatalysts show relatively low performance, which depends on the rational design of such materials.…”

“…(3) The photo-oxidation reactions should be further coupled with a thermal and electro method to improve the catalytic activity, which needs to develop a new type of photocatalyst [67][68][69][70][71][72]. (4) Alloy metal nanoparticle catalysts still need to be further and wildly used in catalytic biomass conversions; as the electronic property can be well modified to tune the catalytic performance, it is a kind of excellent method for designing suitable catalysts.…”

“…However, currently, a more attractive method involves their production from CO 2 . [9][10][11] One established process for synthesizing organic carbonates involves the coupling reaction of CO 2 with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, yielding ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate (Scheme 1). 12 These compounds can then be further converted to DMC or DEC while simultaneously producing anhydrous-grade ethylene glycol or propylene glycol.…”
