Water pollution stands as a pressing global environmental concern, elevating the significance of innovative, dependable, and sustainable solutions. This study represents an extensive review of the use of photocatalytic zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) for the removal of emerging pollutants from water and wastewater. The study examines ZnO NPs’ different preparation methods, including physical, chemical, and green synthesis, and emphasizes on advantages, disadvantages, preparation factors, and investigation methods for the structural and morphological properties. ZnO NPs demonstrate remarkable properties as photocatalysts; however, their small dimensions pose an issue, leading to potential post-use environmental losses. A strategy to overcome this challenge is scaling up ZnO NP matrices for enhanced stability and efficiency. The paper introduces novel ZnO NP composites, by incorporating supports like carbon and clay that serve as photocatalysts in the removal of emerging pollutants from water and wastewater. In essence, this research underscores the urgency of finding innovative, efficient, and eco-friendly solutions for the removal of emerging pollutants from wastewater and highlights the high removal efficiencies obtained when using ZnO NPs obtained from green synthesis as a photocatalyst. Future research should be developed on the cost–benefit analysis regarding the preparation methods, treatment processes, and value-added product regeneration efficiency. Graphical Abstract

Nanotechnology has a versatile use in the field of disease therapy, targeted drug delivery, biosensing, and environmental protection. The cross-linked nanosponges are one of the types of nanostructures that provide huge application in the biomedical field. They are available up to the fourth generation and can act as a payload for both kinds of hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs. There are different methods available for the synthesis of these nanosponges as well as loading the drugs inside them. A variety of approved drugs based on nanosponges are already in the market including drugs for cancer. Other applications include the uses of nanosponges as topical agent, in improving solubility, as protein carrier, in chemical sensors, in wastewater remediation, and in agriculture. The present review discusses in detail about different applications of nanosponges and also mentions about the recent SARS-CoV-2 management using nanosponges.

The use of nitro aromatic compounds for the treatment of protozoal infections as well as anaerobic bacteria is widespread. The global use of antiprotozoal drugs causes significant ecological impact on living systems. In this study, electrochemical detection of the antiprotozoal drug ornidazole (ODZ) was demonstrated through neodymium oxide/graphene nanosheets (Nd2O3/GNS) based electrocatalyst. This hybrid material was prepared with a sonochemical probe method. We characterized the Nd2O3/GNS nanocomposite using various analytical and spectroscopic techniques. For rapid ODZ drug determination, we used Nd2O3/GNS nanocomposite-based slurry to modify the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface. The electrocatalysis of ODZ using Nd2O3/GNS/GCE showed a good linear range (0.01–221 μM), excellent detection limit (0.001 μM), and high sensitivity, along with long-term stability. The practicality of the sensor electrode for ODZ was successfully determined in water and human urine samples, yielding satisfactory recoveries. Thus the results indicated that Nd2O3 with conductive carbon support including graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNT), carbon nanofibers, etc., can be used as a sensitive sensor electrode for the real-time detection of antibiotic drugs that cause human and environment by continuous consumption and improper disposal from the pharmaceutical industries, respectively.
