Green synthesis of nanomaterials for smart biopolymer packaging: challenges and outlooks

Abstract: There are several physical and chemical methods for synthesizing nanomaterials, while the most appropriate techniques involve using green chemistry and eco-friendly material. Recently, green synthesized materials for different applications have gained attention as a result of their environmental friendliness and cost-effectiveness. Applying green synthesized nanoparticles (NPS) in food packaging has been extensively investigated. Biopolymers require filler to enhance the optical, barrier, thermal, antimicrobia… Show more

“…However, its limited water solubility and high toxicity hinder its application in the agro-industry. Nanoscale encapsulation of DCOIT presents an appealing solution to these challenges by mitigating its toxicity and enhancing its water solubility [79]. The encapsulation process not only enhances the stability of DCOIT but also prolongs its antimicrobial activity.…”

“…Among all emerging technologies, packaging plays a critical role in ensuring food safety, as it helps to protect food products from contamination, spoilage, and damage. Emerging packaging technologies are being developed to further improve food safety by providing enhanced barriers against external contaminants, extending the shelf life of products, and providing real‐time monitoring of food quality (Jafarzadeh et al., 2023).…”

“…Different methods are employ for the preparation of nanoparticles (NPs), such as the physical, chemical and green methods [14]. The green method is more efficient than other methods because of their unique and special properties, including their particle size and shape, high surface area, versatility, cost-effectiveness, simplicity, repeatability, controllability, environmental friendliness, and excellent stability [15,16]. In the green method, plant extracts are used as reducing and capping agents [17].…”
