Green tea catechin: does it lower blood cholesterol?

Abstract: Tea is one of the most popular beverages in the world, especially in Asian societies. Green, oolong and black tea are three main types of tea products. Catechin is the principal polyphenol compound in all tea products including four major subgroup compounds, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatehin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC) and epicatechin gallate (ECG). Green tea contains highest amount of catechin compared to oolong and black tea since fermentation process can significantly reduce the amount of catechi… Show more

“…9 Značajan broj istraživanja ukazuju na sposobnost određenih polifenola da odgode razvoj ateroskleroze. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] Prema istim, polifenoli smanjuju taloženje lipida, oksidativni stres, upalu zida krvnog suda, proliferaciju vaskularnih glatkih mišićnih ćelija i endotelnu disfunkciju. “…Polifenoli modifikuju procese uključene u formiranje, napredovanje i eventualno puknuće aterosklerotskog plaka. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] Polifenoli mogu značajno smanjiti apsorpciju lipida inhibiranjem emulzifikacije u tankom crijevu, inhibiranjem aktivnosti pankreasne lipaze, smanjenjem micelarne rastvorljivosti i precipitacije micelarnog holesterola. [13][14][15][16] Smanjena apsorpcija holestelola uzrokuje povećanu proizvodnju mitohondrijalne ribonukleinske kiseline za LDL receptor u jetri.…”

“…The antioxidant capacity of catechins is even higher than that of vitamin E. Numerous studies have demonstrated that catechins can increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD2 and GPX), thus inhibiting the oxidation of LDL to Ox-LDL ( Chen et al, 2020 ; Ahmadi et al, 2022 ; Dal and Yilmaz, 2022 ). Japanese researchers observed that LDL oxidation was prolonged in the catechin group by administering 1 g of catechin in capsule form to 19 healthy men in a double-blind crossover trial ( Suzuki-Sugihara et al, 2016 ).…”

“…The mechanisms include inhibition of pancreatic lipase activity, lipid hydrolysis, and emulsification in the intestine and precipitation of cholesterol micelle. 21,22 Catechin administration can significantly reduce LDL levels. Catechin plays a role in regulating genes that can metabolize total cholesterol thus decreased LDL levels in blood plasma due to catechin activity in lipogenesis gene expression.…”
