Green Travel Behavior in Urban China: Influencing Factors and their Effects

Abstract: With the ever-increasing number of family cars in China, pollution and traffic jams seriously affect residents' daily lives. Motivating residents to select green travel modes is becoming a major issue. Based on the theory of planned behavior, a framework is developed to identify influencing factors and then examine how these factors affect residential green travel behavior (GTB). An empirical study with 332 valid questionnaires finds that personal factors mediate the relationship between soft environmental fac… Show more

“…Therefore, the perception of environmental problems affects environmental behavior (Lacroix and Gifford, 2018;Slovic, 2016). For example, with regard to air pollution, residents avoid outdoor activities and even use facial masks at home to protect themselves from air pollution (Jia, 2018).…”

“…Some scholars believe that PEB is a kind of pro‐social behavior, so their researches are conducted on the basis of norm activation model (Wang, Sun, Wang, & Zhang, 2019; Zhang, Wang, & Zhou, 2013). While others believe that PEB is out of self‐interest, so their researches are conducted based on the theory of planned behavior (Jia, 2018; Zhang, Wang, & Zhou, 2014). In fact, PEB contains both self‐interest motivation and pro‐social motivation (Bamberg & Möser, 2007).…”

“…Therefore, on the basis of the theory of planned behavior (TPB), the factors influencing individuals' green travel intentions in public transportation were analyzed, and an empirical study on the above factors was conducted using the structural equation model. In terms of the research on individuals' green travel intentions in public transportation, on the basis of the TPB, Jia et al [15] studied the relationship between environmental factors and green travel intentions using a questionnaire survey and showed that the government needs to take new measures on relevant policies and transportation systems to increase the proportion of green travel. Ru et al [16] researched the interaction effects of norms and attitudes on green travel intention.…”
