Grey water characterisation and pollutant loads in an urban slum

Abstract: On-site sanitation provisions in urban slums rarely prioritise grey water management, yet it forms the largest fraction of wastewater. This study was carried out to characterise grey water and quantify its pollutant loads in Bwaise III (Uganda) and to provide data for grey water management in urban slums of developing countries. Samples were collected for analysis from ten representative households as well as from four tertiary drains and the main drainage channel for 7 months in two dry seasons. Grey water pr… Show more

“…It is considered high volume, low strength wastewater with high potential for reuse and application. The composition of greywater is varied and depends on the lifestyle, fixtures and climatic conditions (Abedin and Rakib 2013; do Couto et al 2013; Katukiza et al 2014). Reuse of greywater has been an old practice, and it is still being done in areas that are water stressed.…”

“…The major concerns with greywater reuse have been issues with public health perceptions and inappropriate technology for the reuse option (Vigneswaran and Sundaravadivel 2004). Many researchers have studied characteristics of greywater with respect to fixtures, life style patterns and type of settlement (Alsulaili and Hamoda 2015; do Couto et al 2013; Katukiza et al 2014). However, the aim of this study is to assess the performance of greywater treatment system, to further review greywater reuse perceptions, to identify gaps of greywater systems with emphasis on developing countries and to identify scope for further research.…”

“…According to Katukiza et al, the characteristics of the greywater generated by laundry, in the kitchen and in the bathroom can vary significantly [21]. In our study, the identification of the individual xenobiotic greywater components was carried out through a detailed survey of the chemical composition of products found in Australian supermarkets for the use in laundries and for personal care in showers and sinks in an average household, in a manner similar to that reported by Eriksson et al in 2003.…”

“…A grande variação da composição das águas cinzas representa um desafio para o tratamento e a disposição final dessa fração do esgoto. Com seu uso frequente, o solo e as águas subterrâneas podem ser contaminados por altas concentrações de sódio, surfactantes ou microrganismos patogênicos (KATUKIZA et al, 2015). Portanto, seu reúso e disposição final devem ser realizados de forma segura e cautelosa.…”
