Gross morphology of the vastus lateralis muscle: An anatomical review

Abstract: To understand the role of the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle in the pathogenesis of common knee disorders such as patellofemoral joint syndrome, knowledge of its anatomical structure is essential. The aim of this study was to review currently available information on the gross morphology of VL. A structured literature review was undertaken and 36 references, comprising 22 scientific papers and 14 anatomical textbooks, were included. Results of this literature review show that most of the included studies exhibit… Show more

“…Muscle fusion between the VL and VI has been reported in previous studies (Willan et al, 1990;Becker et al, 2009). In an extreme case, the VL and VI could not be distinguished and the extensor apparatus of the knee could be regarded as possessing only three muscle heads (Frohse and Fr € ankel, 1913).…”

“…It is composed of 4 muscle bellies: the rectus femoris (RF), which lies in the anterior portion of the thigh; the vastus medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis (VL) on the inner and outer portions, respectively; and the vastus intermedius (VI), which is located posteriorly [5]. The vastus muscles originate from the anterior, medial, and lateral aspects of the femur.…”

“…This type of study provides a summary of the existing research on a specific question, using explicit and systematic methods of identification, critical appraisal, and synthesis of scientific literature (Sacket et al; e.g., Gross Morphology of the Vastus lateralis Muscle: An Anatomical Review (Becker et al, 2009)). These studies may or may not comprise meta-analysis (statistical tool for combining the results of these studies by obtaining aggregates; e.g., Single site meta-analysis of 6% hydrogen peroxide whitening strip effectiveness and safety over 2 weeks (Gerlach et al, 2009)).…”
