Observations of the annual cycle of atmospheric CO2 in high northern latitudes provide evidence for an increase in terrestrial metabolism in Arctic tundra and boreal forest ecosystems. However, the mechanisms driving these changes are not yet fully understood. One proposed hypothesis is that ecological change from disturbance, such as wildfire, could increase the magnitude and change the phase of net ecosystem exchange through shifts in plant community composition. Yet, little quantitative work has evaluated this potential mechanism at a regional scale. Here we investigate how fire disturbance influences landscape‐level patterns of photosynthesis across western boreal North America. We use Alaska and Canadian large fire databases to identify the perimeters of wildfires, a Landsat‐derived land cover time series to characterize plant functional types (PFTs), and solar‐induced fluorescence (SIF) from the Orbiting Carbon Observatory‐2 (OCO‐2) as a proxy for photosynthesis. We analyze these datasets to characterize post‐fire changes in plant succession and photosynthetic activity using a space‐for‐time approach. We find that increases in herbaceous and sparse vegetation, shrub, and deciduous broadleaf forest PFTs during mid‐succession yield enhancements in SIF by 8–40% during June and July for 2‐ to 59‐year stands relative to pre‐fire controls. From the analysis of post‐fire land cover changes within individual ecoregions and modeling, we identify two mechanisms by which fires contribute to long‐term trends in SIF. First, increases in annual burning are shifting the stand age distribution, leading to increases in the abundance of shrubs and deciduous broadleaf forests that have considerably higher SIF during early‐ and mid‐summer. Second, fire appears to facilitate a long‐term shift from evergreen conifer to broadleaf deciduous forest in the Boreal Plain ecoregion. These findings suggest that increasing fire can contribute substantially to positive trends in seasonal CO2 exchange without a close coupling to long‐term increases in carbon storage.

Purpose of Review Terrestrial ecosystems in the Arctic-Boreal region play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle as a carbon sink. However, rapid warming in this region induces uncertainties regarding the future net carbon exchange between land and the atmosphere, highlighting the need for better monitoring of the carbon fluxes. Solar-Induced chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF), a good proxy for vegetation CO$$^{2}$$ 2 uptake, has been broadly utilized to assess vegetation dynamics and carbon uptake at the global scale. However, the full potential and limitations of SIF in the Arctic-Boreal region have not been explored. Therefore, this review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the latest insights into Arctic-Boreal carbon uptake through SIF analyses, underscoring the advances and challenges of SIF in solving emergent unknowns in this region. Additionally, this review proposes applications of SIF across scales in support of other observational and modeling platforms for better understanding Arctic-Boreal vegetation dynamics and carbon fluxes. Recent Findings Cross-scale SIF measurements complement each other, offering valuable perspectives on Arctic-Boreal ecosystems, such as vegetation phenology, carbon uptake, carbon-water coupling, and ecosystem responses to disturbances. By incorporating SIF into land surface modeling, the understanding of Arctic-Boreal changes and their climate drivers can be mechanistically enhanced, providing critical insights into the changes of Arctic-Boreal ecosystems under global warming. Summary While SIF measurements are more abundant and with finer spatiotemporal resolutions, it is important to note that the coverage of these measurements is still limited and uneven in the Arctic-Boreal region. To address this limitation and further advance our understanding of the Arctic-Boreal carbon cycle, this review advocates for fostering a SIF network providing long-term and continuous measurements across spatial scales. Simultaneously measuring SIF and other environmental variables in the context of a multi-modal sensing system can help us comprehensively characterize Arctic-Boreal ecosystems with spatial details in land surface models, ultimately contributing to more robust climate projections.

The strong correlation between gross primary production (GPP) and sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been reported in many studies and is the basis of the SIF-based GPP estimation. However, GPP and SIF are not fully synchronous under various environmental conditions, which may destroy a stable GPP–SIF relationship. Therefore, exploring the difference between responses of GPP and SIF to the environment is essential to correctly understand the GPP–SIF relationship. As the common driver of GPP and SIF, the incident radiation could cause GPP and SIF to have similar responses to the environment, which may obscure the discrepancies in the responses of GPP and SIF to the other environmental variables, and further result in the ambiguity of the GPP–SIF relationship and uncertainties in the application of SIF. Therefore, we tried to exclude the dominant role of radiation in the responses of GPP and SIF to the environment based on the binning method, in which continuous tower-based SIF, satellite SIF, and eddy covariance GPP data from two growing seasons were used to investigate the differences in the responses of GPP and SIF to radiation, air temperature (Ta), and evaporation fraction (EF). We found that the following: (1) At both the site and satellite scales, there were divergences in the light response speeds between GPP and SIF which were affected by Ta and EF. (2) SIF and its light response curves were insensitive to EF and Ta compared to GPP, and the consistency in GPP and SIF light responses was gradually improved with the improvement of Ta and EF. (3) The dynamic slope values of the GPP–SIF relationship were mostly caused by the different sensitivities of GPP and SIF to EF and Ta. Our results highlighted that GPP and SIF were not highly consistent, having differences in environmental responses that further confused the GPP–SIF relationship, leading to complex SIF application.
