During the horizontal jet grouting in soft ground, injection of large volumes of water and grout into the soil can lead to significant ground displacements. A simple method is proposed in this paper to predict the ground displacements caused by installing horizontal jet-grouting columns. The process of installing a horizontal column is simplified as the expansion of a cylindrical cavity with a uniform radial stress applied at plastic-elastic interface in a half plane. In this study, the analytical solution is adopted to calculate the deformation induced by the expansion of a cylindrical cavity. Considering the main jetting parameters (jetting pressure of the fluid, flow rate of the fluid, and withdrawal rate of the rod) and the soil properties (stiffness of the surrounding soil), an empirical equation to estimate the radius of plastic zone is developed. Two field tests are carried out in Shanghai, China, to verify the correctness and applicability of the proposed method. Comparisons between the predicted and measured values indicate that the proposed method can provide a reasonable prediction. The proposed simple method can be recommended as a useful tool for the design of ground improvement by means of horizontal jet grouting.

Finite elements analysis of an underground collector installed by pipejacking methodUsing the commercial software RS 2 , a 2D finite element program for soil and rock application, the ground response to pipe jacking in pipeline installation in Avilés (north coast of Spain) was analyzed. The geology of the location comprises Quaternary deposits on both flanks of the Avilés estuary and includes different highly variable geotechnical behavior. Both axi-symmetric and plane strain analyses were carried out in RS 2 to simulate in 3D the ground response to pipe advancement. The results demonstrate that the vertical displacements at specific positions in the immediate vicinity of the pipeline were small. The maximum deformation at ground surface was shown to be less than 1.5 mm, which was still safe. However the displacements were found to vary depending on the local properties of the materials drilled. Stress distributions were also computed.

ABSTRACT:Construction of the multiple lane bridges is increasingly growing in the recent years, specifically in the metropolitan cities to decrease the traffic volume and facilitate the road transportations. Steel-concrete composite bridge deck with steel sheeting is one of the deck slabs which showed some advantages over the conventional reinforced-concrete (RC) deck slabs. This study modelled and analysed these kinds of composite slabs comprising of steel sheeting and shear connectors which are filled by normal strength concrete. Finite element analysis (FEA) is applied for modelling and analysing in this research. The results were compared with the experimental test results which were tested earlier. The sample composite deck slabs were modelled and run for analysis by finite element software to obtain the ultimate load and related deflection of slabs under the vertical loading at the center of the deck slabs. The results indicated an acceptable correlation with the experimental test results. In addition, the results of FEA indicated that the horizontal shear resistance is larger by approximately 1.8 times than the required horizontal shear resistance which is in the acceptable range.
