Groundwater quality assessment for sustainable human consumption in arid areas based on GIS and water quality index in the watershed of Ain Sefra (SW of Algeria)

Derdour Abdessamed,
Antonio Jodar-Abellan,
Sherif S. M. Ghoneim
et al.

Abstract: Groundwater quality in arid areas is an issue that requires attention, as often the only source of irrigation and drinking. In this manuscript, a research area of 4590.2 Km2, which depicts important problems of water scarcity and water-poor quality in an arid environment, was assessed. Therefore, GIS-based mapping of the region was carried out to examine the adequacy of groundwater quality. Forty-three (43) groundwater samples were gathered in the fieldwork in March 2022, and various physicochemical limits wer… Show more

“…Likewise, the ArcGIS tool performed spatial distribution maps of twelve main water quality parameters using the inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation method. The WQI has been calculated considering the Algerian drinking water quality standards to know the suitability of water for human consumption 30 . Derdour et al 31 also assessed water quality in arid regions.…”

“…Surface water pollution, climate change-induced drought, and sea level rise lead to groundwater become more important for human beings and ecosystems [1][2][3][4][5]. Groundwater has been used for various purposes, such as domesticity, irrigation, transportation, and industry [6][7][8][9]. The benefit of groundwater use to ecosystems and human beings is very huge [10,11].…”

“…The benefit of groundwater use to ecosystems and human beings is very huge [10,11]. However, groundwater quality has been influenced by both natural and anthropogenic activities [8,9,12]. The natural processes influencing groundwater quality include groundwater recharge, rock -water interactions, mineral weathering, and contaminated water from the adjoining aquifer [8,9,13].…”
