Groundwater quality in arid regions: The case of Hassi Messaoud Region (se Algeria)

Abstract: After chemical quality study, it has been realized that the groundwater of Hassi Messaoud region isn't drinking one according to WHO and Algerian standards for drinking water. This water is highly mineralized and very hard and its major concentrations are often higher than recommended standards, so it requires treatment before use.The time that irrigation water quality is based on riverside standards (1954), the waters of the terminal complex of aquifers have average SAR values high, these waters arrange thems… Show more

“…The Hassi Messaoud region is of vital interest to the Algerian economy, as it is one of the ten largest hydrocarbon deposits in the world (Bouselsal 2017). Since the nineties, the region has experienced intense demographic development with increased industrial and agricultural activities.…”

“…The fresh groundwater in the Hassi Messaoud region is stored in three aquifers: Continental Intercalary, Senonian and Mio-Pliocene (OSS 2010). Currently, the exploitation of these water reserves in the study area is of the order of 10 hm 3 /year for drinking water supply, 14 hm 3 /year for irrigation and 20.50 hm 3 /year for the petroleum industry, of which 63.4% of the withdrawal are distinct to injection and workover operations.…”

“…The groundwater resources in North Africa's arid and semi-arid regions are small and have a lot of spatiotemporal variability (Hamlat et al, 2018;Bouselsal, 2017). However, these resources, which are not very renewable, are largely exploited to meet the inhabitant's needs for agriculture, industry, and drinking water supply.…”
