Groundwater springs in the German Wadden Sea tidal flat: A fast-track terrestrial transfer route for nutrients and dissolved organic matter

Abstract: Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) connects fresh groundwater and marine ecosystems and conveys terrestrially derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) and nutrients from land to sea. The connectivity of terrestrial and marine ecosystems via SGD depends strongly on local environmental settings. For example, SGD composition is modified on its transit through the coastal aquifer, with spring-type SGD from highly permeable aquifers presumably being less affected than diffuse discharge systems from sedimentary env… Show more

“…The SPE method chosen here is among the most standardized methods for DOM extraction. In our study, the recoveries of bulk DOM were within the range of what is commonly found in porewater [ 72 74 ] and the marine water column [ 75 77 ]. In the water column, the extraction efficiency was 61% [ 78 ], whereas in samples with more terrestrial influence, extraction efficiencies were relatively lower, namely 31% and 49% and 61% for P NaOH and PW, respectively.…”

“…Intertidal and submarine groundwater springs have been mapped and exploited by humans for millennia (Moosdorf & Oehler, 2017); however, they are understudied in the scientific literature. Coastal springs provide a ‘short‐circuit’ pathway that rapidly conveys nutrients from terrestrial aquifers to the coastal ocean (Carvalho da Silva et al, 2023). Such springs create plumes in the surface water column that are distinct in terms of their micro‐ and macrofauna, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrient concentrations, dissolved organic matter, and/or other geochemical conditions (Adyasari et al, 2021; Lee et al, 2016; Tamborski et al, 2017; Waska & Kim, 2010).…”
