Groundwater, surface-water, and water-chemistry data from C-aquifer monitoring program, northeastern Arizona, 2005-11

Abstract: Colorado River, 11 sites along Chevelon Creek, and 14 sites along Clear Creek were included. For the four baseflow investigations presented, a 2,000-3,000 microsiemens per centimeter increase in specific conductance was measured in Chevelon Creek from near its headwaters to the confluence with the Little Colorado River because of the contribution of highly conductive spring discharge. Clear Creek showed a less consistent pattern of increase in specific conductance with distance, but still exhibited changes on … Show more

“…This could be an illustration of the complex hydrogeology of the aquifers underlying the Navajo Nation. The C aquifer and N aquifers, named for the Coconino sandstone and Navajo sandstone respectively, generally produce high quality water (Brown and Macy, 2012). The C aquifer is found throughout much of the Navajo Nation, while the N aquifer is found primarily in the central area of Navajo near the Hopi Indian Reservation (Macy et al, 2012).…”

“…The three power plants are Cholla Power Generating Plant in Joseph City, Coronado Generation Station near St. Johns, and Springerville Generation Station in Springerville. Brown and Macy (2012) noted another user, a large paper mill near Snowflake, which has since closed and ceased water usage.…”

“…Unlike the previous two models described, this model does not use refined grid spacing, potentially resulting in less accuracy. Brown and Macy (2012) presents monitoring data from a study of the St. Johns to Flagstaff I-40 corridor area beginning in 2005 in cooperation with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). The report includes WY 2005 to WY 2011 groundwater levels from 35 C-aquifer wells, surface-water discharge data from three now-discontinued streamflow-gaging stations, comprehensive water-chemistry analyses from selected well sites and surface-water sites, and water-quality field parameters and discharge measurements from four baseflow investigations conducted on reaches of Clear Creek, Chevelon Creek, and the Little Colorado River.…”

“…Possible future effects of groundwater withdrawal on base flow derived from groundwater discharge near Winslow are indeterminate, as are natural variations in recharge. A recent monitoring study on Chevelon and Clear Creeks was too brief to observe base-flow trends in these tributaries (Brown and Macy, 2012).…”
