Group Affiliation and Firms’ Export Intensity: A Cross-Country Study

Abstract: The paper investigates whether the export intensity of business companies is greater for group--affiliated firms (GAFs) or for standalone firms (SAFs). The empirical analysis makes use of the World Bank Enterprise Survey for Latin American economies. The results show that GAFs have lower export intensity than SAFs. “…The next and last review we performed consisted of classifying corporate reports and sustainability strategies according to the multilatina nature of the BGs analyzed ( Table 8). The reason for this is, as can be observed in previous works on Latin American BGs [7,81], that BG internationalization is one of the factors measuring their degree of diversification. Additionally, multilatinas have emerged as a study field, not only from internalization and corporate strategy phenomena, but also from finances, corporate governance, and sustainability, among others.…”

“…However, other scholars dispute this positive view. Castellacci (2015b) identified several factors that may produce less pronounced international activity among BG affiliates compared with unaffiliated firms. At the heart of the counterargument is the suggestion that group affiliation will promote a parochial outlook on international activities because the benefits of reputational effects and trust relations diminish with geographic distance.…”

“…Moreover, the World Bank translates and back-translates the survey instrument. The WBES data are used widely in economics and development economics studies (e.g., Harrison et al, 2014), international business studies (Cuervo-Cazurra, 2016), and studies of BG functioning (Castellacci, 2015a, 2015b). The data provide information on firm ownership and group affiliation as well as several indicators of export activity, human resource quality, the adoption of new ICTs, and access to internal and external finance, as well as sufficient information on our control variables.…”

“…For example, regulatory uncertainties and lack of market support mechanisms can manifest in curtailing firms' access to financial resources (Khanna & Palepu, 1999), limiting small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises' (SMEs') ability to finance CSR activities effectively. In this context, innovative activities are hampered by weak institutional settings (Castellacci, 2015).…”
