Group B Streptococcal Disease in Nonpregnant Patients: Emergence of Highly Resistant Strains of Serotype Ib in Taiwan in 2006 to 2008

Abstract: Among the 228 group B Streptococcus (GBS) isolates recovered in 2006 to 2008, higher resistance to erythromycin (58.3%) and clindamycin (57.9%) was found in isolates with certain resistance phenotypes. Serotype Ib isolates (24.6%) were the second most prevalent serotype, next to serotype V (29.4%), and showed the highest resistance rates to erythromycin (91.0%) and clindamycin (82.1%).

“…The incidence of erythromycin resistance was 92.5%. This is higher when compared with Taiwan (58.3%) and western countries, ranging from 11.5% to 32% [24][25][26][27]. Last, the nonsusceptible rate to clindamycin reported here was higher than that in Korea (54.0%) [28] and the US (38.4%) [29].…”

“…In a previous study, we determined that the predominant ERY/CLI resistance phenotype was iMLS B in serotype Ib and cMLS B in serotypes III and V. [19] The prevalent resistance genes vary between countries, with ermB, ermTR, and mefA being prevalent in Spain and the USA [26] and ermB and lnuB being prevalent in Korea. [25] The association of the erm and mef drug resistance genes with drug resistance phenotype and serotype was seldom reported.…”

“…agalactiae is a zoonotic pathogen of fish, bovines, and humans. [19,21,22] Most GBS isolates were collected from female patients. [19] The predominant human serotype differs between countries, with serotype V being the primary serotype in the USA, [21,23] serotype III in France and Zimbabwe, and serotypes III and V being the primary serotypes in Korea.…”
