Group-based Aerobic Interval Training in Patients With Chronic Heart Failure: Norwegian Ullevaal Model

Abstract: The Norwegian Ullevaal Model of cardiac rehabilitation is a novel high-intensity, interval-training program. The 4 patients with CHF in this case series who participated in this program experienced improvements in physical capacity and quality of life and had no adverse events. These results are consistent with recent evidence supporting the efficacy of high-intensity interval training in people with CHF. Randomized clinical trials are needed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of this group-based, high-intensit… Show more

“…In a pilot study [13], four patients with chronic heart failure (New York Heart Association class III) undertook interval training. Three of the patients increased their aerobic capacity by 17%, 25%, and 52%, respectively, and the fourth patient did not complete cycle ergometry testing because of limitations related to his pacemaker.…”

“…The CON group continued with their normal Cardio Club fitness program, consisting of two to three sessions per week according to a national standard program (The Ullevaal Model) specialized for coronary patients [4]. This training model consists of warming up, 2 to 3 intervals of step, running or other exercises in six minutes duration with increasing intensity with a heart rate of 85-90 % of HFmax at the end.…”

“…At the end of day an equally matched person has some time to discuss any issues that were not mentioned earlier. Early after discharge from the hospital, patients are also invited to participate in a group-based exercise training programme guided by a physiotherapist, 2-3 times a week for 8-12 weeks, based on the Norwegian Ullevål model [13]. Patients with increased risk for recurrent coronary events are referred to the Department of Preventive Cardiology, OUS for further evaluation of risk factors and intervention.…”
