“…Combining reports across the study period, the vast majority of both boys and girls reported being only attracted to the opposite sex (98.1% of boys and 95.3% of girls) at some point; the frequency of any‐same sex attraction endorsed over the 3 years of the study period was higher for girls than boys (13.8% and 12.0%, respectively). These rates and variations by gender are in keeping with other studies of youth from the United States and internationally where girls report greater rates of same‐sex attraction (Kuyper, de Roos, Iedema, & Stevens, ; Lucassen et al, ; Narring, Huwiler, & Michaud, ; Remafedi, Resnick, Blum, & Harris, ).…”

Therefore, it may be worthwhile asking adolescents directly about attraction, and to examine its overlap with the feeling of love for different gender partners.…”

“…The 2009/10 HBSC questionnaires in Finland, France, Iceland, the Netherlands, and Switzerland included questions on gender of love partners, and findings on Dutch and Icelandic adolescents have been reported (Kuyper, de Roos, Iedema, & Stevens, 2016; Thorsteinsson, Loi, Sveinbjornsdottir, & Arnarsson, 2017). However, differences in question wording did not make cross‐national analyses possible.…”

“…Fourth, in many studies those who are unsure about or do not want to disclose their sexual orientation are excluded from the analyses. 32 Finally, although some national studies have been conducted on the health of SMY in Europe, for instance, in Iceland, 33,34 Ireland, [35][36][37] The Netherlands, 38 and the United Kingdom, 39 most of the existing findings are from North America, and it remains unclear whether their findings can be generalized to other countries and cultures. 40,41 This study investigates associations between patterns of romantic love and self-rated health and multiple health symptoms, in nationally representative samples of 15-year-old adolescents in eight European countries and regions.…”
