Growth analysis and yield performance of four potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) Varieties

Abstract: An experiment with four potato varieties, namely Asterix, Cardinal, Diamant and Granola was conducted at the Horticulture Research Field of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during November 2013 to February 2014 to observe the behaviour of growth parameters and yield potentiality of potato. Final harvest of tuber was done at 90 DAP. LAI, CGR, RGR and NAR were not significantly influenced by the varieties. Irrespective of varieties, LAI increased progressively with time reaching… Show more

“…The SLA for potato depends on the cultivar and growth stage, and temperature [42], which was confirmed in the present study. Early foliar expansion of potato is associated with a strong increase in SLA [41].…”

“…If potato LAI exceeds 3, the intercepted photosynthetically active radiation value changes very little [39,40]. According to Howlader and Hoque [41], irrespective of potato cultivars, LAI increased progressively over time, reaching a peak at 60 days after planting and thereafter declining. The rate of assimilation area expansion showed the interaction between genotype and environment and varied by year [42], which was confirmed in the present study.…”

“…In addition, potato plants respond very sensitively to weather changes during vegetation, which may cause the fall or growth of new leaves. Leaf area index (LAI) describes the growth in lowland fields, and increases progressively over time, reaching its maximum at 60 days after potato planting and declining after that time point [37,38]. In the present study, the silicon-based (Na 2 SiO 3 ) biostimulant Optysil caused an increase in tuber number and tuber weight per plant under water deficit in 2016 and 2018 seasons.…”

“…These three potato cultivars are developed in Holland and Germany (Gregoriou et al, 1997). Exotic origin of these three potato cultivars would be one of the reasons for this observed high susceptibility to S. litura under prevailing climatic conditions of Punjab, Pakistan (Abbasi et al, 2004;Howlader and Hoque, 2018). As S. litura is endemic to South Asian regions (EPPO, 2015), successful exploitation of exotic host plants by native insect pests may be associated with the fitness cost including reduced feeding potential on ancestral native host plants and differential plant chemistries of exotic and native plant genotypes (Atijegbe et al, 2020).…”
