Growth and characterization of single crystals

Abstract: High-quality Bi 2þx Sr 2Àx CuO 6þd ð0oxp0:5Þ single crystals have been grown successfully using the travelling-solvent floating-zone (TSFZ) technique. The samples with x40:05 are in the underdoped level. The structure of these crystals was investigated by X-ray diffraction. The evolution of c-axis lattice parameters with varied x is displayed, which is strongly associated with the behavior of T c . The crystals exhibit superconducting transitions with T c ¼ 9-0:8 K for the samples with x ¼ 0:05-0:20, while for… Show more

“…Based on magnetic susceptibility measurements, spin-glass-like behavior was observed below 3 K for x = 0.4 [25] and below 4 K for x = 0.5; neither magnetic order nor diamagnetism were detected above 2 K in the x = 0.3 and 0.2 samples. According to Luo et al [22], the superconducting transition temperature, T c , is ∼ 1 K at x = 0.2, rising up to a maximum of 9 K at x = 0.05, as shown in Fig. 3(b).…”

“…These results provide strong circumstantial evidence that q STM does not correspond to q co ; instead, it more likely corresponds to a nesting of antinodal states close to 2k F , where k F is the nominal Fermi wave vector [16,21]. This is not incompatible with a stripe origin, but would involve modulations along the charge stripes rather than perpendicular to them. While several variants of Bi2201 have been studied in the literature, we chose to work with Bi 2+x Sr 2−x CuO 6+y because it is possible both to vary the hole concentration in a controlled fashion and to grow sufficiently large crystals with the floating-zone technique, as previously demonstrated by Luo et al [22]. We prepared single crystals of Bi2201 with x=0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5.…”

“…More heavily underdoping can only be achieved by chemical substitution [1,2]. By substituting trivalent Bi ions for divalent Sr ions into the apical plane of Bi 2 Sr 2 CuO 6+δ (Bi2201), we have further pushed the underdoping threshold continuously to the insulating phase [3]. We establish a concrete linear relationship between the reduction of the hole concentration and the Bi substitution through ARPES by measuring the reduction of the Luttinger volume enclosed by the FS.…”

“…T c of superconducting samples were determined by AC susceptibility, the superconducting transition width is about 0.5 -1.3 K. More technical details have been described previously [3]. ARPES experiments were performed at the beamline U1NIM of the Synchrotron Radiation Center in Wisconsin, and the beamline 12.0.1 of the Advanced Light Source in California.…”
