Growth and Cultural Characteristics ofOphiocordyceps longissimaCollected in Korea

Abstract: We investigated the effect of nutritional and environmental factors on Ophiocordyceps longissima mycelial growth. The longest colony diameter was observed on Schizophyllum (mushroom) genetics complete medium plus yeast extract, Schizophyllum (mushroom) genetics minimal medium, and Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA); however, malt-extract yeast-extract agar, SDA plus yeast extract, yeast-extract malt-extract peptone dextrose agar, SDA, oatmeal agar, and potato dextrose agar showed higher mycelia density. A temperatu… Show more

“…The highest colony growth was obtained at pH 7. This was similar to previous studies on other fungal species [16][17][18]. However, pH 7 was not statistically different from pH 6 and 8 (p > 0.05).…”

“…This is same as findings reported on other fungal species namely Cordyceps nutans Pat. [16], Ophiocordyceps longissima [17], Ophiocordyceps heteropoda [18], Cordyceps cardinalis [19] and Cordyceps sinensis (now known as Ophiocordyceps sinensis) [20]. It was interest- A. CHIOZA, S. “…Cordyceps fungi range in habitat from aerial to epigeal to subterranean ones [74], based on their respective host species. When the host stage is adult, they grow on exposed environments such as leaf litter or are attached to some plant parts such as leaf and branch and in contrast to the larval or pupal stages that are buried in soil (hypogeal) or on wood up to nearly 50 cm, for example, O. longissima [75] and O.…”

“…In addition, findings of Liu et al [43] revealed that illumination does not affect the mycelial growth of Isaria farinosa on PDD. Furthermore, Sung et al [44] observed no obvious difference in the colony diameter of Ophiocordyceps longissima between light and dark conditions on solid media. In contrary, Kalaw et al [30] revealed that illumination significantly influenced the mycelial growth of five mushroom species on solid medium: L. sajor-caju and S. commune (CLSU strain), whereas dark condition showed maximum growth of G. lucidum (strain B), L. tigrinus (CLSU strain), G. lucidum (strain A), and C. cinerea (Sto.…”
